UHS Sets New Academic Standards for Medical and Dental Students

UHS Sets New Academic Standards for Medical and Dental Students

University of Health Sciences UHS has approved revised academic regulations for medical and dental students during its 85th Syndicate meeting held on Monday. Led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the meeting endorsed a minimum 90% attendance requirement and a 70% passing mark criterion for MBBS and BDS students. This decision aligns with the latest guidelines issued by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PM&DC and will be enforced from the 2024-25 academic session. The students can get the detailed information of UHS Implements New Academic Standards for Medical and Dental Students.

Mandatory Attendance and Examination Eligibility

As per the new policy, students must maintain at least 90% attendance to qualify for annual examinations. Those failing to meet this requirement will be barred from appearing in their exams. Additionally, students must obtain a minimum of 70% marks to successfully clear their professional examinations.

Applicability to First-Year Students

These updated regulations will exclusively apply to students enrolling in MBBS and BDS first-year programs from the 2024-25 session onward. Students already pursuing their degrees under previous academic policies will not be affected. Currently, medical and dental institutions require a minimum 85% attendance and a 50% passing mark threshold, which will remain applicable to existing students.

Increase in MBBS Seat Capacity

The Syndicate also approved an increase in MBBS seat capacity at two private medical colleges. Sahara Medical College, Narowal, and Sharif Medical College, Lahore, will now accommodate 150 students instead of the previous 100-seat limit, following a recent PM&DC notification.

Meeting Attendees and Key Decisions

The meeting saw the participation of Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Nadia Naseem, Dr. Zahid Pervaiz, and Registrar Kiran Fatima, along with other senior faculty members. Dr. Zahid Pervaiz was also nominated as a member of the UHS Finance and Planning Committee. Representatives from the Punjab Specialized Healthcare and Finance Departments joined the discussion virtually.
