Transforming 9th & 11th Classes Grading & Passing Standards in Pakistan

Innovative Grading System and Higher Passing Thresholds for 9th and 11th Grade Students A momentous announcement has been made, particularly concerning students scheduled to take the 9th and 11th-grade board exams in 2024. The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen IBCC is preparing to introduce a novel grading formula and marking system across all educational boards in Pakistan, marking the initial phase of a pivotal decision by the IBCC. Under this revised system, students will not only receive their total marks but also have their grades and CGPA displayed on their Detailed Marks Certificates DMCs. The students can get the detailed information regarding Transforming 9th & 11th Classes Grading & Passing Standards in Pakistan.
Elevated Passing Marks
Another significant change is the increase in the passing marks for these exams, set to take effect at the beginning of the next academic year. This adjustment represents a notable shift in how students performance will be evaluated by all educational boards in Pakistan.
Introduction of the New Grading System in 2024 Phase-1
This fresh grading system will be implemented starting with the 2024 board exams for 9th and 11th-grade students. Under this updated grading scheme, all educational boards in Pakistan will assign grades and CGPA alongside the obtained marks of 9th and 11th-grade students on their result cards, provided the candidates clear all their exams. For instance, if a student scores between 95% and 100%, they will receive a grade of A++, and their CGPA will be 5.0. The specifics of the new marking system for 9th and 11th-grade students in 2024 are illustrated in the table below.
Marks Obtained in % | Description | Letter Grade | 5.0 Scale CGPA | |

Crucial Decision-Making by IBCC
This announcement regarding the new grading system encompasses all educational boards in Pakistan. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission IBCC made this momentous decision during their meeting in October 2023, which involved officials from educational boards representing various provinces. During the meeting, they not only devised the new marking system but also redefined the minimum passing marks for matric and intermediate students. The implementation of these changes will be phased in gradually, promising to enhance the quality of education in Pakistan and provide students with a consistent method to gauge their academic progress.

Revised Passing Percentage for 2024 Board Exams
During this recent meeting, in addition to introducing the new grading method, the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen made another critical decision. Not only did they unveil the new marking system, but they also decided to raise the minimum passing marks for all matric and intermediate exams in 2024. This significant change involves increasing the minimum passing percentage for all matric and intermediate students to 40%, requiring candidates to attain at least 40% marks in each subject, up from the previous passing percentage of 33%. This decision reflects a substantial adjustment in the assessment criteria, aligning with the objective of upholding a higher standard for student achievement in these examinations.
Future Phases of IBCC’s Decision
The IBCCs decision regarding the new grading system entails a phased approach. In Phase 1 2024, the grading system and passing marks for 10th and 12th-grade students will remain unchanged from the previous method for the year 2024. In Phase 2 2025, the IBCC has opted to entirely dispense with the numerical marking system, assigning only grades and CGPA to students starting from 2025. Nevertheless, 10th and 12th-grade students will continue to receive numerical marks alongside the grade and CGPA, with the minimum passing percentage set at 40%. In Phase 3 2026 and onwards, the IBCC will completely eliminate the numerical marking system for both matric and intermediate part 1 and part 2 students. Only grades and CGPA will be indicated on the students result DMCs, with the minimum passing percentage remaining at 40%. Old marks-based failure, additional, and improvement candidates will be evaluated according to the previous result pattern.
