Sindh Cabinet Approves Grace Marks for Karachi Students

In response to the controversial results of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi BIEK, the Sindh provincial cabinet has approved the allocation of grace marks to first-year intermediate students in Karachi. The decision follows a report submitted by the sub-committee of the Sindh Assembly regarding the disputed outcomes of the exams. Earlier this year, the Sindh Assembly, following the demand of opposition parties, set up a parliamentary committee led by Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah to investigate the irregularities in the BIEK results. The committees findings led to a decision to grant grace marks to students who had not passed their exams.

Parliamentary Panel’s Recommendation and Cabinet Decision

The parliamentary committee had recommended that 15% grace marks be given to first-year students in Mathematics and Physics, and 20% in Chemistry. However, during a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the provincial cabinet decided to provide 20% grace marks in all three subjects—Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics—to all affected students.

Reform Efforts and Investigation into BIEK Irregularities

In addition to the grace marks, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah called for reforms in the BIEK. He directed the Chief Secretary to investigate alleged irregularities in the education boards across the province and submit a detailed report.

Ban on Plastic Bags and Non-Degradable Products

In a separate but significant move, the Sindh cabinet also approved a complete ban on the manufacturing, sale, and use of plastic bags—specifically shopping and carrier bags—throughout the province. This decision is part of the governments initiative to address environmental concerns. The provincial government also approved an amendment to the Sindh Prohibition of Non-Degradable Plastic Products Rules 2024, aiming to impose a broader ban on non-degradable plastic products in the region.
