Punjab Schools Adjust Summer Holiday Schedule Due to Heat Wave
Responding to the ongoing severe heat wave, the Punjab School Education Department has made further revisions to the summer holiday schedule for both public and private schools across the province. Revised Summer Holiday Schedule:
A recent notification issued by the department mandates that all government and private schools in Punjab, including Lahore, will now close from May 25 onwards. This decision comes after consultations with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority PDMA regarding the escalating heat conditions.
Ministers Announcement and Reasoning:
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat explained that numerous private schools had requested earlier commencement of summer holidays due to the intense heat expected in the coming weeks. He emphasized the importance of student health and safety during this period, citing feedback from parents who overwhelmingly supported starting the holidays this week.
Exemptions for Schools Conducting Exams:
While originally planned to begin on May 22, the summer vacation start date has been adjusted to accommodate schools conducting examinations. These institutions have been granted conditional permission to remain open solely for the purpose of completing ongoing assessments.
Previous Summer Vacation Plans and Adjustments:
Previously, the provincial government had scheduled summer vacations from June 1 to August 14 due to the prevailing heat wave. Schools are set to reopen on August 15 as per the latest notification, which applies uniformly to both government and private educational institutions.
Changes in School Operational Hours:
To mitigate exposure to extreme daytime temperatures, the operational hours of educational institutions have also been adjusted. Schools will now operate from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM from Monday to Thursday, aligning with efforts to protect students and staff from the harsh midday sun.
