Punjab Govt to Transform Commerce Colleges into IT Institutions

Initiative to Modernize Education
The Punjab Department of Higher Education has begun implementing this initiative, which seeks to modernize the educational system and align it more closely with the current demands of the job market.
Transformation of Commerce Colleges
All 85 government commerce colleges in Punjab will be revamped and transformed into IT institutions. This decision was made due to a decline in student enrollment in commerce courses.
Addressing High Costs and Low Enrollment
According to a report by the Higher Education Department, each commerce college currently has fewer than 100 students. The government spends up to Rs. 300,000 per commerce student. This high cost has driven the decision to convert these colleges into IT institutes to reduce expenses and align educational programs with job market needs.
Enhancements and New Facilities
The transformation will involve hiring experts and adding new facilities to the IT colleges. Upgrades will include co-working spaces for young IT entrepreneurs and e-libraries to enhance research and learning.
Swift Implementation
The project is set to commence within the next 10 days, with efforts to complete the conversion swiftly. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat emphasized that this change aims to enhance Punjab’s position in the global IT industry.
