Punjab Govt Declares Extended School Holidays for Vulnerable Students

In response to the escalating smog crisis in Lahore, the Punjab government has implemented a proactive health measure, announcing a three-month holiday for children in schools who are particularly vulnerable to air pollution. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, this initiative is specifically designed to protect students with pre-existing health issues that are exacerbated by the severe smog affecting Lahore. The announcement was made by Sania Ashiq, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Special Education, and follows the provisions of the Punjab Environment Act of 1997 to prioritize the health and safety of at-risk children. Three-Month Smog Break for Special Students

The Punjab government’s initiative will grant a three-month leave to select students, from November 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025. Sania Ashiq explained that this decision was essential to safeguard these children from the increasingly harmful air conditions in Lahore. This extended break aims to protect vulnerable students from prolonged exposure to toxic air, which could aggravate their health.

Health Concerns for At-Risk Students

According to Sania Ashiq, the need for these extended holidays was driven by medical advice highlighting the serious health risks posed by Lahore’s polluted air. Health experts have declared that the city’s air quality is particularly hazardous for children with health conditions, increasing their likelihood of respiratory illnesses, chest infections, and severe allergic reactions.
