Private Schools in Punjab Raise Fees & Annual Charges
Many private schools in Punjab have raised their monthly fees and introduced hefty annual charges at the beginning of the new academic year, placing an additional financial burden on parents. Reports indicate that monthly fees have increased by Rs1,000 to Rs2,000, with some schools demanding up to Rs20,000 in annual charges—actions that violate existing government guidelines for fee structures. Introduction of Transport Charges and Legal Concerns
In response to a Lahore High Court ruling, several major private school chains have begun charging transport fees, claiming they must provide transportation services to students. However, parents have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of intervention from district education authorities and the provincial education ministry in controlling these unauthorized hikes.
Private Schools Defend Fee Hikes
Kashif Adeeb Jawadani, president of the All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association, justified the fee increases, stating that they were in accordance with the legal provisions and the schools internal policies. However, many parents feel these charges are unreasonable and unfairly burdening families.
Non-compliance with Government Regulations
Despite government regulations stating that private schools are only allowed to charge tuition and examination fees, numerous institutions have violated these rules by imposing additional annual charges. To comply with the Lahore High Courts transport order, some schools have started offering transportation services, but they are charging parents up to Rs30,000 for the transport fund.
Governments Inaction and Public Outcry
The Punjab government has recently proposed outsourcing public schools to address educational shortcomings but has yet to tackle the issue of unregulated fee hikes by private institutions. A member of the Punjab Assembly recently submitted a motion addressing the lack of regulation in private school fees, describing school owners as an influential and unchecked group.
Rising Educational Costs and Concerns Over Accessibility
Rana Liaqat Ali, Secretary General of the Punjab Teachers uni on, voiced opposition to the privatization of schools, arguing that outsourcing would erode government oversight. He also raised concerns about the rising cost of education, compounded by the increasing prices of essential goods, which could make quality education inaccessible for many families.
