PMDC Approves Fee Regulation Plan for Private Medical Colleges

PMDC Approves Fee Regulation Plan for Private Medical Colleges

Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC has endorsed a plan to regulate tuition fees for private medical and dental colleges, as reported by ARY News on Tuesday. These recommendations have been sent to a special committee for evaluation, with the final verdict to be announced by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who leads the medical education committee. New Fee Structure and Conditions

As per the proposed plan, the minimum annual fee for private medical colleges will be Rs1.8 million, while the maximum limit is set at Rs2.5 million. An earlier suggestion to set fees between Rs1.2 and Rs1.5 million was rejected by private medical college representatives. Currently, these institutions charge between Rs2.5 and Rs3.5 million annually.

Additional Provisions for Students

The recommendations also include a 5% yearly increase in tuition fees. Furthermore, teaching hospitals associated with private medical colleges must allocate 35% of their beds for social welfare patients. Private institutions will also be required to grant five scholarships annually and offer installment-based payment options to assist financially struggling students.

Private College Representatives Support the Plan

Reports indicate that representatives of private medical and dental colleges have agreed to the proposed regulations. In 2012, PMDC had set a cap of Rs500,000 per year on tuition fees with a 5% annual increase, but compliance with this rule remained inconsistent.

Ongoing Efforts to Standardize Tuition Fees

Last year, in July, PMDC sought legal consultation from the health ministry to introduce a standardized fee structure. However, despite ongoing discussions for nearly six months, the problem of exorbitant tuition fees in private medical institutions remains unresolved.
