No More Medical Colleges or Seat Increases for 3 5 Years
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC has imposed a temporary ban on the establishment of new medical and dental colleges, as well as on increasing student seats, for a duration of three to five years. Concerns Over Faculty Shortage
During a recent PMDC Council meeting, members raised concerns about the declining number of faculty members required to maintain academic and training standards in medical education. The rapid growth of medical institutions has surpassed the availability of trained educators, affecting the quality of clinical training and research.
Faculty Deficit in Medical Colleges
Official statistics indicate that Pakistan currently has 187 medical and dental colleges, which collectively require 26,018 faculty members. However, only 22,146 qualified educators are available, resulting in a significant shortfall. This deficiency is negatively impacting both medical education and patient care.
Regulatory Measures to Maintain Standards
To prevent further strain on faculty resources, PMDC has temporarily restricted the expansion of medical colleges and student admissions. This decision is aimed at preserving educational quality, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and maintaining the integrity of medical training programs.
Government Involvement for Educational Stability
Additionally, PMDC has formally requested the National Health Services to intervene and implement necessary measures to safeguard the country’s medical education system from further deterioration.
