NED updates admissions policy as Karachi’s inter results decline

NED University of Engineering and Technology has introduced changes to its admission policy for the 2025/26 academic year in response to the notably low pass rates in Karachi’s inter examinations, as reported by the local media. The students can get the latest updates of NED University updates admissions policy as Karachi’s inter results decline.
Increased Emphasis on Entrance Test Scores
Under the new policy, the weightage of intermediate exam results for BE and BS admissions has been reduced, while the importance of entrance test scores has been increased. The updated formula will now determine the merit list for admissions.
Decline in Intermediate Pass Rates Sparks Policy Shift
The decision was prompted by a drastic decline in Karachi’s intermediate pass rates, with only 29% of pre-engineering students and 35% of pre-medical students passing their exams. Despite recommendations from a fact-finding committee led by Provincial Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah, no corrective measures have been implemented to address the issue. The committee had proposed increasing marks by 15-20% in physics, chemistry, and mathematics for these students, but the suggestion remains unexecuted.
New Admission Eligibility Criteria and Seat Allocation
Due to the poor performance in intermediate exams, only students securing at least 57% marks will be eligible to apply for admission. This adjustment is expected to exclude a significant number of applicants. Previously, the weightage for admissions was equally divided at 50% for intermediate results and 50% for the entrance test. However, under the revised system, entrance test scores will now hold a 60% weightage, while intermediate results will contribute 40%.
Admission Timeline and Academic Calendar
The academic council has confirmed that advertisements for admissions will be published in the last week of March. The first entrance test is scheduled for May 24, with a second test planned for July 12. The new academic session will commence on August 18, with 3,016 seats available across 35 programs. Additionally, 100 more seats have been added to expand the university’s intake capacity.
Ensuring Admission Standards Amid Educational Challenges
NED University’s decision to revise its admission policy is aimed at maintaining the quality of its selection process despite the challenges faced by the education sector. By placing greater emphasis on entrance test performance, the university seeks to uphold academic standards while adapting to the prevailing circumstances.
