Primary and Secondary Schools Implement Firm Mobile Policies

According to the findings, nearly every primary school 99.8% and 90% of secondary schools have now placed limitations on the use of mobile phones within school premises. The data demonstrates a significant movement among school administrators to create distraction-free learning environments.

Education Leaders Call for a Nationwide Legal Ban

Daniel Kebede, the General Secretary of the National Education uni on NEU, has shown strong support for a legal restriction on student smartphone use. He emphasized that a government-enforced ban would relieve pressure on school staff and help parents manage digital boundaries for their children.

Concerns Mount Over Smartphone Exposure and Youth Safety

Kebede also voiced concerns about the serious risks smartphones pose to young users, particularly with regard to online threats. He stressed that reducing students’ screen time is essential to safeguarding their wellbeing and development.

Push for Social Media Restrictions Among Minors

In a bold recommendation, Kebede proposed a total ban on social media for children under 16. He likened platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram to the tobacco industry due to their addictive nature and potential to harm young people’s mental health.
