Mandatory Internship for BS Students Under Revised HEC Undergraduate Policy

Higher Education Commission Pakistan has introduced a comprehensive update to the Undergraduate Education Policy. This policy outlines the academic requirements for undergraduate students, necessitating the completion of 120 to 144 credit hours. Within this framework, students are expected to complete 30 credits in general education courses, along with a minimum of 72 credits in specialized fields. Moreover, interdisciplinary courses have been integrated into the curriculum. One of the notable additions is the mandatory internship, spanning six to eight weeks, as well as a practical project equivalent to three credits. All higher education institutions are mandated to implement these new regulations, effective from the autumn semester of 2023. Mandatory Internship Program Overview

An integral component of the revised policy is the obligatory internship program for each student. This internship, which must last for a duration of at least 9 weeks, can be undertaken following the completion of the fourth semester, generally scheduled during the summer break. The collaboration between universities and employers will facilitate the arrangement of sufficient internship opportunities.

Flexible Internship Placement

The internships, as outlined in the Undergraduate Education Policy, transcend the boundaries of specific subjects or specialties. In other words, students are not confined to internships directly linked to their major, affording them the flexibility to intern in various organizations, including their own university.

Internship Duration Requirements

For Bachelors degree programs: For students pursuing BS degrees, the internship duration is set at nine 9 consecutive weeks. However, exceptions can be made if unavoidable circumstances prevent the completion of a single 9-week internship. In such cases, two internships of roughly equal durations can suffice, provided reasons are well-documented.

For Associate degree programs: Associate degree students can undertake a non-continuous internship, collaborating with different institutions across multiple semesters to fulfill a minimum requirement of 360 hours.
