In a major stride towards inclusivity and equal access to education, the District Education Council of Lahore has made a groundbreaking decision to provide special classes for transgender students in all government schools across the provinces 260 uni on Councils. This decision comes at a time when there is an encouraging trend of increased interest in education among transgender community members. Currently, 1,488 transgender individuals are enrolled in public schools across the province, according to the Punjab School Education Department SED.

Lahores District Education Authority DEA is actively working to create educational opportunities and a conducive learning environment for transgender community members. Following a recent meeting, it was decided to involve all uni on Councils in Lahore, ensuring maximum opportunities for transgender individuals to access education.

Overcoming Challenges and Ensuring Accessible Education

The closure of Lahores only dedicated transgender school in the Garden Town area raised concerns about the availability of educational institutions for the transgender community. DEAs CEO, Pervaiz Akhtar, expressed disappointment over the closure and acknowledged the challenges faced, such as transportation and limited funds. To address these challenges, DEA has devised a comprehensive plan to allocate classes and teachers in all uni on Councils, enabling transgender students to receive education within their own communities.

Campaign for Admission and Enrollment

DEA will launch a campaign to encourage admissions and ensure maximum enrollment of transgender individuals in public schools. Dedicated teachers are already available to educate transgender students, reducing the need to hire additional staff on a contract basis. Two classrooms will be allocated for community members, minimizing the need for extra infrastructure.
