HEC Issues Closure Orders for Universities Due to Smog
In response to the hazardous smog levels choking Lahore and Multan, the Higher Education Commission HEC has ordered universities and colleges in these cities to suspend physical classes. A recent notification revealed that these institutions will transition to online learning to protect both students and staff from the dangerous air quality.
The Punjab government has also taken drastic measures to minimize the populations exposure to the worsening pollution. All schools in the province, except those in Murree, will remain shut until November 24. This is part of an ongoing effort to limit the negative effects of the intense smog that has blanketed the region.
To ensure public safety, the government has advised residents to stay indoors and wear face masks. Outdoor activities have been restricted, and citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
Lahore and Multan will experience a lockdown every weekend—Friday through Sunday—as part of the efforts to control the air quality crisis. Local authorities are monitoring pollution levels continuously and are prepared to implement further restrictions if air quality continues to deteriorate.
Additionally, a one-week suspension of construction projects has been enforced from November 16, aiming to reduce pollution generated by these activities.
Marriyum Aurangzeb, Punjabs Senior Minister for Information and Environment, has warned about the severe health risks of the smog, which are being compared to the dangers posed by COVID-19. To support the health system during this critical period, markets will close early at 8 p.m., paramedic leave has been canceled, and hospital operating hours have been extended to accommodate increased medical cases.
