Harvard Expands Free Tuition Program to Benefit More Students
Harvard University has announced a significant expansion of its financial aid program, allowing students from families earning up to $200,000 per year to receive free tuition. This initiative, set to launch in fall 2025, raises the previous income limit of $85,000, making higher education more accessible for middle-income students. Under the revised policy, students from families earning under $100,000 annually will receive full coverage for tuition, housing, meals, and other essential expenses. Harvard’s initiative aligns with similar efforts by institutions such as MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, which have expanded their financial aid programs to address concerns about the rising cost of higher education.
This decision comes at a time when elite universities are under growing scrutiny regarding accessibility and diversity. Recent enrollment reports revealed a in Black student admissions after the Supreme Court’s ban on affirmative action. Harvard hopes that removing financial barriers will help attract a more diverse student population.
Backed by its $53 billion endowment, Harvard has committed $275 million toward financial aid this year alone. University President Alan M. Garber emphasized that ensuring financial accessibility is crucial to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
