Hanoi Teen Scores 8.5 in IELTS on First Try

Hanoi Teen Scores 8.5 in IELTS on First Try

At just 13 years old, Le Tuan Minh, a student from Hanoi, has achieved an exceptional 8.5 score in the IELTS exam on his very first attempt. A student of True North International School, Minh attributes his success to early English exposure and his interest in reading programming and robotics-related content in English. He took the IELTS exam on March 31 and received 8.5 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, with a 7.5 in Writing. IELTS Success Against the Odds

According to official IELTS statistics, most test-takers from Vietnam are between the ages of 16 and 22, with only 1% managing to score 8.5 or higher during the 2023–2024 period. Minh began preparing for the IELTS test last year, focusing on understanding the structure of the exam and the types of questions he would face. He aimed to achieve an overall band score of 8.0 by the end of 8th grade and joined a prep course held twice a week. He also practiced daily through an online account, completing one to three tests in each skill area every day.

Managing the Challenge of Writing

Minh was particularly concerned about the Writing section, especially Task 1, which often involves data interpretation. Fortunately, his exam included a process diagram related to a solar-powered water purification system—a topic he was more familiar with. For Task 2, he was asked to explore the challenges faced by middle-aged workers in competing with younger employees and propose solutions. He argued that limited job opportunities were a major concern and suggested that technological innovation, such as AI, could create new roles that attract younger talent and ease the competition. His background in tech helped him formulate strong ideas and organize his essay effectively.

Confidence in Reading and Speaking

In the Reading section, Minh found the Matching Headings task most difficult, due to the similar nature of answer choices. He overcame this by carefully examining the main ideas, supporting evidence, and concluding sentences of each paragraph. Minh felt confident in the Listening and Speaking sections, largely due to the English-speaking environment at his school, which helped him sharpen his communication skills and listening abilities.

Minhs remarkable achievement highlights how a supportive learning environment and early exposure to English can empower young students to succeed in challenging academic tests.
