Early Summer Vacations Proposed in Punjab Schools & Colleges
As the Punjab heatwave intensifies, education departments across the province are being urged to implement emergency heat protection protocols for students and staff.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority PDMA has dispatched an official heat advisory to both the School Education Department and Higher Education Department, stressing the importance of preemptive planning to cope with extreme weather conditions.
In its notice, the PDMA has advised schools and colleges administrators to reschedule academic hours to steer clear of the mid-day heat. Additionally, the possibility of early summer vacations is under consideration, depending on the progression of the weather.
Authorities are also emphasizing critical steps such as:
- Ensuring constant access to cold, safe drinking water
- Encouraging the use of lightweight, breathable school uniforms
- Enhancing ventilation in classrooms
Health experts warn that overheated, poorly ventilated environments can lead to severe conditions such as heatstroke, especially in younger children. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has projected higher-than-normal temperatures for the upcoming weeks, reinforcing the need for immediate action.
The PDMA has also extended this advisory to district commissioners and school management authorities, underlining the urgency to prioritize heat safety for students during this ongoing climate crisis in Punjab.
